  2. Hi,
thank you so much for all the ressources on the Daily 5! I am curious about "la loupe des sons"...how do students use it and how do you integrate it?

    1. During Daily Five read to self, students can choose to use the magnifiers, a magic finger of math (plastic green Halloween fingers that slip on your own finger), or toobaloos (plastic whishper phones to amplify your own voice), (a range of tools) to help them focus during reading. In the early months of grade 1 students had little they could "read" so instead their task was to find sound blends in the books in their book box. They held the magnifier over the text and tried to spot specific blends we had learned. They could also write down the words they found in their journal, a white board, or on chart paper. I sent the magnifiers home with students who really wanted one - I think home in a summer reading package too.

  4. Amazing web site and links thank you! I'm a non french speaking parents with 2 (soon to be 3) kids in FI and I am finding the teacher my gr 1 has kind of has us in the category of an "English speaking home" like its an illness or something.... Bc of this I feel like she doesn't have high expectations of my daughter and she also doesn't push her or nurture he the way she should to get continued growth... Our big problem is getting our gr 1 to communicate in french...I'm guessing due to lack of confidence (her teacher scares her) so all her marks are A's and b pluses EXCEPT in her french communication ....What can I as an English parent do at home to help the french vocab and confidence using it at school, along??? I would LOVE to have more conversations in french but what I remember is so little... do you have links for key phrases, or conversations? we read in french and English every night....but it seems like I should be doing more? yet I have not clue what that is! Thanks again for posting some great resources!

    1. Hi there, wow tough situation. Songs are awesome, simple songs to sing as you zip your coat, put on socks, pack a bag. I'd like to round some up that you can learn and teach to her, some phrases too. Can I e-mail you? shannonwiebe@hotmail.com Are you from a Canadian province?

    2. Playlists of stories and songs are on my YouTube channel. It isn't a great collection but it's a start. I used the videos for reading, I have catchy songs on my pinterest boards by topic so under les couleurs and les formes and so on you'll find more (and better) songs. Here is the channel link http://www.youtube.com/user/frenchvideoplaylists, they are organized by grade and season.

  7. Hi, I am a high school French teacher in Virginia and I love your resources. I do have a question: what is the daily five?

    1. Daily Five is an approach to teaching a language arts block developed by the Gail Boushey and Joan Moser and outlined in their books "The Daily Five" and "CAFE". Many schools in my district have adopted this approach as the cornerstone of their language arts blocks. The Daily Five website can be found here:

  8. Hi Shannon,
I want to begin by saying I love your website and the resources you have provided. It is greatly appreciated! I was wondering if you can provide me with some advice. I am a recent graduate from Quebec moving to Calgary to teach grade 2 French Immersion and I don't know what to expect. What level of French should I expect from my students? Any information would help. Thank you in advance!
